Academic Policies

24. Deferred examination Policy

ITAGC College ensures that students have the opportunity of two resits in order to achieve competency on assessments.

ITAGC College allows students the opportunity of two resits in order to achieve competency on assessments.

Students will be informed of their need to resit assessment if competency has not been achieved. If the student does not attend the resit, as arranged, without an appropriate reason, then the assessor will record this as one resit for which the student did not achieve competency.

The assessor will contact the student to make an appointment for the second resit.
If the student does not complete the assessment after two resits then the student will receive a result of “Unable to achieve competency” (X).

Each piece of assessment offered at resits must not be the same as the original pieces.  They may be similar, but not the same.

25. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL Policy

RPL stands for Recognition of Prior Learning which means that you may be able to receive recognition for any previous learning you may have acquired, regardless of where or how you acquired this learning. For example, you may have completed a course from another tertiary institution or University, or you may have acquired specific skills through on-the-job training or even through hobbies or community work. Therefore, students may be able to shortener their courses, or substitute the leaning of a new or more advanced skills for those they have already mastered. ITAGC College has a policy of ensuring that Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is offered to all applicants:1.       Students can access to ITAGC College’s policy of RPL through ITAGC College website and student handbook2.       ITAGC College provides information of RPL to students prior the Enrolment and during the student Orientation Session 3.       Students’ awareness of RPL is monitored through the Student Feedback and Satisfaction Form.

26. Language, Literacy, Numeracy Policy

ITAGC College is committed to providing assistance in the area of literacy and numeracy to all students.
Students with English as a Second Language are required to undertake language testing as required by DEFAT prior to enrolment, to ensure they meet the language requirements for the course or qualification they are undertaking.

Where learners are enrolled and are subsequently identified as having LL&N problems, ITAGC will offer them support through its instructional staff.  Staff will provide additional practice and teaching. Where learners requires assistance which beyond the skills of ITAGC staff, they will be referred to outside agencies such as TAFE.

Other students are not required to undertake literacy and numeracy testing prior to enrolment.  However, they are to be informed that literacy and numeracy testing is available on request.  There may be a fee payable for this service.  This testing is undertaken by specialist literacy and numeracy teachers associated with the ITAGC College.

The methods of assessment literacy and numeracy specialists may utilise include discussions with the student about prior education and experiences, questionnaire and self identification check list, records of previous skills, education and training, a screening test,  production of evidences of IELTS testing by a recognized testing authority or a combination of these.

The literacy and numeracy specialist will also consult with the Manager to access the Training Package or course the student is planning to undertake, in order to assess whether particular language may be involved.

Should these tests indicate that the student will need specialist training or consultation during their studies, arrangements will be made for ongoing assistance with a specialist teacher. This may incur an additional cost to the students.

All teachers are required to have knowledge of literacy and numeracy issues, and how these are applicable to the Training Packages or courses they are teaching.

27. Course progress Policy

l   ITAGC College monitors students’ progress in the course in which they are enrolled. The College will assess student course progress every study period. The College will identify ‘at risk’ students who are likely to ‘fail’ in meeting the course progress requirements and notify them of this situation, offering them counselling and assistance in completing course requirements. If by the end of the study period the student has failed to meet course progress requirements, the student is sent a warning letter and an invitation to attend an intervention meeting with the Student Contact Officer, the meeting allows the college to develop a strategy for the students academic improvement.

l   If the student is identified as ‘at risk’ in a consecutive study period by the trainer he/she will warn the student of the increasing risk of being reported to the Department of Immigration and  Citizenship (DIAC). At this stage the trainer will also assist the student in completing the course requirements.

l   By the end of the consecutive study period the student does not achieve course progress requirements the College will notify them of intent to report them to DIAC for breach of student visa conditions. Students will be advised that they may access the College appeals process if they wish to, and have 20 working days in order to do so.

l   If the student does access the appeals process, any reporting to DIAC or cancellation of COE will be suspended until the outcome of the appeals process. If the outcome affirms the decision of the College, the College will proceed to report the breach to DIAC and/or cancel COE. If the outcome affirms the appeal of the student, the student will be allowed to continue to study.

28. Applying for Exemptions

ITAGC recognizes the AQF qualifications and Statements of Attainment issued by other Registered Training Organizations.

This means that if a student has completed another relevant qualification, or part of a relevant qualification, while enrolled as a student of another Registered Training Organization, that this qualification or part of a qualification will automatically be accepted for credit or exemption by ITAGC College towards the qualification or part of a qualification the student wishes to study at ITAGC College. Please see the Director for further information about mutual recognition.

29. Disability Assessment Provision

Students with a disability which may result in them being disadvantaged are advised to discuss special needs regarding all types of assessment with the Assessor at the commencement of the teaching session.

Students with a disability which may cause them to be disadvantaged in an examination and who may require individual examination provisions are expected to register through the Student Counsellor or Assessor at least ten working days prior to the commencement of the examination period, to enable sufficient time for provisions to be met.

Students may apply for special examination conditions if they have a disability which will prevent them from demonstrating the extent of their knowledge in an examination.

Late notification of requirements may result in difficulty ensuring the necessary arrangements can be put in place.

Special Examination Conditions include: extra time for reading or resting or writing or toilet breaks, use of a scribe or a computer, exam papers in Braille or large print, ergonomic furniture, better lighting etc.

30. Temporary Injury or Disability

Students with a temporary injury or disability which may cause them to be disadvantaged in an examination and who may require individual examination provisions must inform the Student Counsellor or Assessor immediately.

Students with a temporary disability that will prevent them from sitting an examination may apply for special consideration.

31. Reassessment Appeal

If the student believes that an error has been made or an injustice done in respect of an assessment, the student may request a review in writing stating the grounds for the review request.

The student should gather evidence to support their view, including the assessment item.

The appeal will be to the Manager who will prepare a report for the Director.

The director will provide a written response and if the student feels the issue remains unresolved, he/she has 15 College days (3 weeks) to initiate an appeal after the issuing of an assessment result.
The outcome of each appeal, including the reasons, is recorded by the assessor through the Appeal Form and Request for Reassessment.

32. Grading System

Students will achieve one of the following grading:

C - Competent.

N - Not Yet Competent (has not achieved competence over one or more units of competence)

U - Unable to achieve competency (has not achieved competency after one resit)*

*If a student does not achieve competency over all units of the competency being studied, one additional resit will be provided.  The student will be required to set a time for this re-sit with their Lecturer.  If a time is set and the student does not arrive for the appointment, this will be considered to be one additional re-sit.

Students who receive grade of “U” will be required to enrol in the module again, and pay the costs involved.
